The Payesan woman by Chico Prats

In 2017, one year after the centenary of the birth of José Manuel Chico Prats, the Ethnographic Museum of Eivissa paid tribute to the artist with a temporary exhibition in room B of the museum. This exhibition focused on two of the most important aspects of his work: on the one hand, the part that was most closely connected to his roots, the figure of his mother and his native land; on the other hand, the artist’s view of the figure of the Ibizan Payesan woman. These paintings were often inspired by the photographs he used to take with his inseparable side view camera. It seemed his objective was pointing elsewhere, allowing him to steal gestures, looks or subtle attitudes.
